Our team conducted several case studies to determine the most common functions and features of HR portals. In addition, we examined other applications for inspiration on how function and user experience could be improved and performed an analysis of Deloitte’s current HR portal.

To better understand how we might leverage and refine the successes of Deloitte’s current design, we analyzed the portal for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
We asked employees about their use of HR portals through interviews and a survey distributed through Google Forms. By the end of our primary research, we acquired 725 data points about what employees like, loathe, and need in their HR portal.
We collected 725 data points through our research. Next, we converted our data points to yellow stickies on Miro, our online whiteboard. We then affinitized our data to find the common ideas. We condensed the initial 725 data points into 23 final insights.
We realized that employees: want their digital experiences to be personalized, feel a lack of connection due to working from home, and need work-life balance for wellness and productivity.
We built three personas from collected research and interview data. These personas represent different Deloitte employee archetypes, from newer hires to senior managers, and their needs and behaviors. Throughout ideation and development, Jessie, Benjamin, and Melissa helped us narrate what a new HR portal experience could be, and how it could affect people like them.
We sketched the best ideas to show their functions. After discussing sketches, we voted to choose the ideas that best fit our design opportunities and research.
With help from Benjamin, one of our personas, we walked Deloitte through how the streamlined content structure helps their talent complete tasks. News and Events are a new feature on the dashboard, and Benjamin can easily sign up for a conference featured on the banner.
Benjamin logs into his HR dashboard to change his address.
He notices the news and events section on the dashboard, and decides he wants to learn more.
Benjamin clicks the learn more link and reads about the upcoming conference.
After concluding he wants to attend, Benjamin registers using the button on the right side of the screen.
Upon completing registration, Benjamin has the option to invite his coworkers to attend the conference.
Benjamin attends the conference and is awarded an increase in total CPE hours
