"Your Daily Neck Reset Pal!"

Neckless is an app on Smart Watch. Using Neckless, users follow the motion that releases the pain in their neck by moving their heads. Emojis can also be created from your neck trackings in the app.

Those who work with laptops often suffer from neck problems, and they lack professional guidance to relieve the pain during their short breaks.

Research

We knew that neck problems are quite common among people and they often twist their necks in order to relieve neck tension.

Ideation

After synthesizing research insights, I conducted a quick brainstorm and sketched early ideas. These rapid sketches helped shape the initial concept and led to the octopus-inspired movement idea for Neckless.

User Flow

Here is a flow chart showing all the steps in the app. The chart makes it super easy to follow.

Persona

During research, I found that most young people like to follow guidelines to resolve their neck problems. They try not to check their phones during homework or work because they are distracted by it.

Mid-fi Prototype

This flow shows how users demonstrate using this app. The first function is the tutorial that teaches you how to follow the skeleton to get rid of neck pain. Next is the detailed instruction on how to treat specific neck muscles. The third step is to save your facial expression as an emoji, which you can send to your friends via message.

User Testing & Iteration

There are 5 testers with me. Most of them can easily understand the guide and they feel the feature is friendly. However, two of them mentioned they don’t like the social emoji function. They think they want immediate rewards, whatever it’s a sentence or a card. By the way, they think the skeleton is cute but not fun, they want different themes and more customizable.

Hi-fi Prototype

Based on the testing, I rebranded the Neckless. I removed the emoji feature and used an immediate reward system instead. I chose the jellyfish theme as an example. When they do a series of neck relief steps, they will unlock a piece of the jellyfish puzzle. It can encourage them to use the app more to collect different breeds of jellyfish.
